Former Aston Villa, Everton, and Manchester City midfielder Fabian Delph have publicly announced his retirement from football.


The 32-year-old England national midfielder’s contract with the Toffees ended in the summer after injuries restricted him to just 21 appearances for Everton over the last two seasons.


He announced this on Tuesday, September 27, 2022, via his Instagram account.
Delph wrote: “So today I announce my retirement with nothing but happiness and gratitude for what this beautiful game has given me,”


“Massive shout-out to my family, friends, players, and staff from the amazing clubs I have been fortunate enough to represent as well as the support I have had from the fans”.

Fabian Delph made 204 Premier League appearances for Everton, Manchester City, and Aston Villa after he started his club career in the Championship with Leeds United and won 20 international caps for England.


The 32-year-old former Villa and Manchester City midfielder was part of coach Gareth Southgate’s 2018 World Cup England squad in Russia, where he made three appearances for his side, including coming off the bench in the quarter-final victory over Sweden.

After the reports that he could leave the club at the end of the 2015 season due to his contract expiring, Delph signed a four-and-a-half-year contract on 25 January 2015, keeping him at Villa until 2019.


Meanwhile, on the 10th of July, Delph was reported to be having a medical ahead of an £8 million transfer to Manchester City.

However, Delph never showed up for his scheduled medical, and thereafter released a statement on the Aston Villa website ensuring he would be staying at the club and would not be moving to Manchester City.


Whereas, reports a week later emerged that Fabian Delph had again changed his mind and was having a medical at Manchester City ahead of a prospective move.


Many Villa supporters despised him for turning his back on Aston Villa; the club he committed his future and loyalty to after assuring them he would remain.
