Evening Starts
The Brazilian stars of Manchester United shone in the FA Cup victory over Reading on Saturday night. Casemiro scored a beautiful brace before Fred audaciously flicked home.
Unexpectedly, Erik ten Hag only made one change for a relatively simple fourth-round assignment that his team initially struggled with at Old Trafford.
But in the rainy second half in Manchester, United won 3-1 despite Reading’s consolation goal from Amadou Mbengue after Andy Carroll was dismissed.
At Deepdale, Tottenham easily defeated Championship side Preston, winning 3-0.
Heung-min Son scored twice for Antonio Conte’s team early in the second half, and then Arnaut Danjuma, making his debut, added a third.
3pm kick-offs
Premier League side Fulham, who were held at home by Sunderland, was one of the five out of the seven 3 p.m. games that required replays.
The Cottagers were behind in the sixth minute, but just after the hour mark, Tom Cairney drew even, and the score remained 1-1.
The other matches that ended level included Championship leaders Burnley drawing 0-0 at League One Ipswich, League Two Grimsby visiting Luton and holding out for a 2-2 result, League One pair Sheffield Wednesday and Fleetwood drawing 1-1, and an all-Championship match between Blackburn and Birmingham ending 2-2 after a late Blues equalizer.
While Bristol City defeated fellow Championship team West Brom 3-0 to advance, Southampton defeated Blackpool 2-1 to get to the fifth round.
The Saints are particularly loving the cup tournaments this season and have recovered from their midweek Carabao Cup loss.
12:30 p.m. kickoff
The early games on Saturday did not provide any surprises; Leeds and Leicester, both from the Premier League, defeated opponents from lower divisions.
Jack Harrison scored the game’s first goal for Leeds against Accrington, and then Junior Firpo and Luis Sinisterra added second-half goals to make it 3-1 for the Whites.
Leslie Adekoya, 18, scored a late consolation goal for League One Accrington, but the top-flight team advanced.
A similar thing happened when Leicester defeated Walsall, even though the final score wasn’t as lopsided.
Although Youri Tielemans missed a penalty earlier in the game, the Foxes triumphed 1-0 thanks to a goal by Kelechi Iheanacho in the 68th minute.
For the second time in a row, Leicester traveled to League Two opposition and prevailed by a slim 1-0 margin.
