Evan Ferguson has provided an update on his injury as the striker is set to miss the rest of the 2023/2024 season.

What happened?

Ferguson has missed the last three matches for Brighton and will not feature in Thursday’s meeting with defending champions Manchester City as he has been struggling with an ankle injury.

The Republic of Ireland international suffered minor injury problems during the campaign after bursting onto the first-team stage with ten goals in 25 appearances in all competitions last season.

The 19-year-old has not added to his six league goals in 27 appearances since November and has not featured for Brighton & Hove Albion since the end of March 2024.

The Seagulls were uncertain how serious that injury was but boss Roberto de Zerbi confirmed at his pre-match press conference that Ferguson, “felt pain in the ankle a lot of time and he tried to move on, to play with pain. But in the end, he preferred to stop and to think about next season.”

However, the striker has shown his concern about the injury via his Instagram page, he wrote; “it’s been a season of mixed emotions, taken plenty of lessons, and positives from it but still frustrating that it has ended earlier than I would’ve wanted”.

He added; “Wishing the lads the very best of luck for the rest of the final few games, I may not be able to help on the pitch but I’ll be supporting them every step of the way. Counting down the days to pre-season already and getting back to 100% fitness next season.”

It will be a disappointing end to a difficult season for Evan Ferguson, who was on a run of 23 games for club and country without a goal.

In addition, Evan Ferguson will not play any part in Ireland’s upcoming friendly games in June under a caretaker manager as the forward has been ruled out for the rest of this season by his club.

He was unable to find the net for Ireland in the March 2024 games against Belgium and Switzerland and played just once for his club after that, as a late sub in a defeat to Liverpool.

Ferguson’s absence will be an added headache for Brighton & Hove Albion who have also lost Ecuador left-back Estupinan to a calf injury during a 1-1 draw against Burnley on Saturday, April 13.

What’s next for Evan Ferguson and Brighton?

The 19-year-old will be in rehabilitation working on his fitness ahead of the club’s pre-season tour in preparation for the next season.

Brighton & Hove Albion, on the other hand, will be seen next in action when they lock horns with Manchester City in the Premier League on Thursday, April 25, at 8:00 WAT.
