Erik ten Hag has provided an update on Sergio Reguilon’s injury after the Spaniard was subbed off during Manchester United’s victory against Burnley at Turf Moor.
Sergio Reguilon was noticed struggling with injury against Burnley before Erik ten Hag replaced him with Raphael Varane in the 79th minute.
The 26-year-old joined the Old Trafford outfit on loan from Tottenham Hotspur on transfer deadline day following issues with Man United first-choice left-back Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.
He was yet to make his debut for Manchester United until the match against Brighton & Hove Albion. It was a nightmare debut for Reguilon as Manchester United slumped to a shock 3-1 home defeat to the Seagulls at Old Trafford.
The game against Burnley was the third time Reguilon will represent the 20 time Premier League champions after he was named among the squad that played against Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, 19th of September.
After full-time at Turf Moor, Erik ten Hag declared that the Spaniard wasn’t suffering from injury but a slight illness.
The Dutch manager further said Reguilon had not been feeling well before the match but requested to play through the illness following Man United’s insufficient options in defense.
Speaking with reporters over the 26-year-old injury update, Erik ten Hag said; “Reguilon was ill, that tells something about the character and spirit they want to show”.
He added; “He was ill but wanted to play, wanted to support and contribute to the team”.
Manchester United struggled to secure a 1-0 victory over newly promoted Burnley, thanks to a beautiful Bruno Fernandes volley shortly before the game ended in the first half. The goal was enough to end the Red Devils’ three-game losing streak.
Burnley played the visitors all through the second half but they couldn’t find the back of the net as Onana stood lived up to the bidding with stunning saves to deny the home side their equaliser.
The Red Devils have been struggling since the beginning of the 2023/2024 Premier League campaign and part of their issues have been injuries affecting a number of first-team players.
Due to the Red Devils’ injury list, Jonny Evans made it to the United starting XI for the first time since 2015 after his shock return to the club this summer, he played alongside Victor Lindelof at center-back, with Diogo Dalot on the right and Reguilon at left-back.
What’s next for Manchester United and Sergio Reguilon?
Erik ten Hag’s men will lock horns against Crystal Palace in the EFL Cup third round on Tuesday, 26th of September at Old Trafford.
Man United will be looking forward to seeing Reguilon back in action for the game with Shaw and Malacia still out with injuries so the manager won’t run out of options at the left-back.
