What is El Clásico?

Any football game between arch-rivals FC Barcelona and Real Madrid is referred to as El Clásico or simply el clásico.

The phrase can be used for every encounter between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, including those in the UEFA Champions League and Copa del Rey. It originally referred to events held in the Spanish championship but has now gone beyond that.

Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu stadium will host the first El Clásico of the upcoming season between Barcelona and Real Madrid on October 16, 2022. The teams will then square off at Camp Nou on March 19, 2023.

However, this year’s El Clasico will also feature an inaugural ‘Soccer Champion Tour’ match between Real Madrid and Barcelona in Las Vegas.

Champions Real Madrid

Real Madrid’s first match of their title defense is against Almeria on the south coast, while Barcelona welcomes Rayo Vallecano to Catalonia.

Note that in 2021–2022 Los Blancos won their 35th league championship. The Carlo Ancelotti side is even more potent going into the new campaign after the additions of Antonio Rüdiger and Aurélien Tchouaméni this summer.

The dates resemble those from the last term fairly closely. The first match took place in 2021–2022 at Camp Nou on October 24 while the second contest took place at the Bernabeu on March 20.

Between the two teams, Barcelona enjoyed the greater head-to-head record. Despite falling to Real Madrid 1-2 when Ronald Koeman was in command; Barcelona thrashed Madrid 0-4 in the return match at the Bernabeu.

In the end, Real Madrid won the La Liga title. Over the course of the season, they outperformed Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, winning the La Liga title as well as the Champions League in Paris.
