Edson Alvarez has revealed that Bundesliga Champions Bayern Munich were interested in bringing him to Allianz Arena in the summer.
Edson Alvarez signed for West Ham for £35m from Ajax for a 5-year deal at the beginning of August, penning a five-year contract until June 2028.
However, just two month into his spell with the Hammers, he revealed that Bayern Munich wanted to sign him in the summer.
The Mexican international ultimately chose to join David Moyes’s West Ham United in the Premier League rather than move to Germany.
Edson Alvarez has also been previously linked with several clubs including Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea and Arsenal but the Hammers won the race to sign him.
Edson Alvarez has claimed that he is quite happy to have joined West ham but he also revealed he was open to joining Bayern should the opportunity present itself.
While speaking to Sky Deutschland, the Mexican said that: “It was a very busy summer. In the last weeks (of the transfer window), I knew about the interest from FC Bayern.”
“Everything can happen. I’m always open, but at the moment, I’m really enjoying my time at West Ham. I want to play and show the people my best qualities. But in the summer, you never know what’s going on.”
“I’m very happy about that (transfer to West Ham). I’ve always mentioned that it was my dream to move to the Premier League. In my opinion, it’s where the biggest competition is.”
“West Ham is a great club with very nice people. As a player, it’s important for me to play regularly and to get minutes. I’m playing, so I’m happy. I believe we’re doing quite well in the Premier League so far”.
Edson Alvarez
Edson Omar Álvarez Velázquez is a Mexican professional footballer who was born on 24th October 1997 and plays for West Ham United and the Mexico national team.
Edson Alvarez was born to Adriana Velázquez and Evaristo Álvarez in Tlalnepantla de Baz, a municipality located just north of Mexico City.
He describes his early experience in football as working for his family’s company, which made uniforms for neighborhood teams.
Due to his small stature, Alvarez left Pachuca barely two years after joining at the age of 10. Considering giving up football, he encountered pushback from his parents, who thought he had the skill to follow his dream of becoming a professional player.
After a three-month tryout, Álvarez made the Club América young team after deciding to give it a shot.
Edson Alvarez would travel three to four hours each way from his house in Tlalnepantla to the club’s training site in Coapa in order to attend the daily team workouts.
Alvarez claimed that he would allocate about seventy percent of his monthly income to transportation.
