Newcastle United recorded their second victory of the season after 21 Premier League games and the coach of the club, Eddie Howe believes that the 1-0 victory over Leeds United on Saturday, July 22, could motivate the club to escape relegation.

Newcastle United have been in the relegation zone from the start of this season to date. Even though a Saudi-Arabian-backed consortium worth over £300 billion took over the club late last year, much has not changed.

However, Newcastle United have been recording improved performances under coach Eddie Howe, especially after the 2022 January transfer window opened.

Recall that Newcastle United have signed about seven players in this January transfer window. Some of the notable names among them include Chris Wood from Burnley, Joe Willock from Arsenal, and Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid.

Others are Yoshinori Muto from SD Eibar, Florian Lejeune from Alavés, Matty Longstaff from Aberdeen FC, and Jake Turner from Colchester Utd.

Since the arrival of most of the new signings this January, Newcastle United have recorded a 1-1 draw with Watford on January 15, and then a 1-0 away victory over Leeds United on Saturday, January 22.

In the game against Leeds, Newcastle United’s Jonjo Shelvey made all the difference when he scored the winning goal via a free kick in the 75th minute.

After the game, coach Eddie Howe noted that his players have the belief that all is not over for the club in their quest to survive relegation, adding that the 1-0 win over Leeds could transform the club’s 2021-2022 Premier League campaign.

Jonjo Shelvey celebrates his goal against Leeds United.

The coach said: “Today we learned that the team is resilient. They are fighting for each other and fighting for the club.

“They have a belief that we’re not dead and buried and there’s more to come. I’m so pleased for everybody connected with Newcastle that we won the game. It was a big match and hopefully, it can transform our season.”

On the impact two of coach Eddie Howe’s new signing, Chris Wood and Kieran Trippier had on the 1-0 win over Leeds United on Saturday, the coach described the two players as “magnificent”.

“Wood and Trippier were magnificent for the team”, the coach said. “I thought they made huge contributions to the match and that’s the power if you can get [recruitment] right, you can elevate the team.

“We’re still looking to do that, but I do back the players that we have here already.”

The 1-0 win over Newcastle United has lifted the club to the 18th spot on the league table with 15 points in 21 games. They are currently a point below safety which means that once they win their two games in hand, they could overtake 17th placed Norwich City.

So far this season, Newcastle United have recorded 10 defeats, 9 draws, and just two wins. Their next Premier League game which is against Everton scheduled to kick off at 20:45 on February 8 could push them back to safety if they beat the struggling Everton side.
