Dayot Upamecano has become one of the most sought-after defenders in Europe and he might be dragged by three clubs, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, and Chelsea during the 2021 summer transfer window.
The CEO of Bayern Munich Karl-Heinz Rummenigge who seemed more interested in the defender revealed that his club and two Premier League clubs are in strong contention for the signature of the 22-year-old French center-back.
Dayot Upamecano is currently playing for German Bundesliga side RB Leipzig. He joined the club from Austria side Red Bull Salzburg on January 13, 2017, for a transfer fee worth €10million.
Since then, Dayot Upamecano has gone on to make 138 appearances for Leipzig’s senior team in which he scored four goals and provided three assists.
This season alone, the 22-year-old French center-back has made 18 German Bundesliga appearances in which he scored a goal and provided an assist.
Due to how intelligent, fast, and strong his defending is and his ability to assist the attack, Upamecano’s transfer market value has skyrocketed to €60million. Yet, the price tag placed on the Frenchman would not scare Bayern Munich, Liverpool, and Chelsea away.
The good news for the top European clubs that have shown interest in Dayot Upamecano is that the France international will be free to leave Leipzig if any club can pay the £38million release clause attached to his contract. The fact that he still has over two years left on his contract with Leipzig, would not stop Upamecano to leave this summer, thanks to the clause on his contract.
Among the top clubs that have shown interest in him, Bayern Munich seemed to be more serious in sealing a deal with the youngster. The reigning German Bundesliga champions have officially approached Leipzig in an attempt to kick start the transfer process.
Bayern Munich intend to use Dayot Upamecano as a replacement for David Alaba who might leave Bayern in the coming transfer window. The Austrian’s contract will expire in June 2021 and has refused to sign a deal with Bayern. Hence, the club is ready to allow him to join any club of his choice for free.
Even though it seemed that Bayern Munich is almost winning the race to acquire the services of Dayot Upamecano, the club’s CEO insisted on Monday, February 1, that it is a contest involving three attractive clubs.
“In addition to Bayern Munich, there are at least two quite attractive clubs interested,” Rummenigge said.
“The fact is that the player is interesting, and the fact is that we will almost certainly lose David Alaba at his position. I can’t say if there will be other departures at the position.
“You have to let things grow in peace. We have a good relationship with Mr. Struth.
“The player will know what he wants at some point. We have a good relationship with RB Leipzig as well. I have had a conversation with Oliver Mintzlaff.
“When things become concrete, we’ll talk again.
“The fact that Chelsea and Liverpool are also interested in him proves that he has very good qualities. He can replace David Alaba.”
