Schmeichel was quick to congratulate De Gea on surpassing his record, the legend took to his Twitter page with a message that reads; “The 180th clean sheet was hard earned, well deserved with two out of this world saves; well done David De Gea”.
De Gea’s outstanding cup victory comes at a time when his immediate future as United’s top goalie is up in the air.
There are questions as to whether the Spaniard can play football Erik ten Hag-style.
The distribution and start of sweeping action by De Gea have been requested.
With a key FA Cup fifth round match against West Ham United coming up on Wednesday, March 1st, 2023, the players must instantly refocus after the Carabao Cup victory ended a six-year Man United trophy drought.
A few days later, they host Real Betis at Old Trafford in the opening leg of their Europa League round of 16 matches before playing their bitter rivals Liverpool in the Premier League at Anfield.
In addition, the 12-month option for United to extend De Gea’s contract past this summer has not yet been used, but negotiations for a new long-term deal with a fair wage cut are currently underway.
