Darwin Nunez has been suspended for five international matches by South American football governing body CONMEBOL after the incident in the Copa America semi-finals between Uruguay and Colombia.
After the Colombian team defeated Uruguay in the semi-finals of the 2024 Copa America, a lot of Uruguay players and staff went into the stands to fight against the Colombian fans.
Nunez was captured as the main lead in the attack. He was seen trying to throw a chair at the fans.
Nunez is one of the Uruguayan attackers that will miss the country’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay, Venezuela, Peru, and Ecuador.
However, he will participate in Premier League games for Liverpool and other competitions.
In addition, Nunez will pay a fine of $20,000. Also, the CONMEBOL suspended Rodrigo Bentacur for fighting in the semifinal of the 2024 Copa America.
The South American football governing body suspended Bentacur for four matches. He will pay a fine of $16,000.
Also, Jose Gimenez, Mathias Olivera, and Ronald Araujo received a three-match suspension coupled with a $12,000 fine.
More so, Five players, Matias Vina, Sebastian Caceres, Brian Rodriguez, Emiliano Martinez, and Facundo Pellistri, who played lesser roles in the incidents, will pay a $5,000 fine.
The Uruguay football federation will pay a fine of $20,000.
Uruguay national team manager Marcelo Bielsa defended the horrible action of his players, saying, “The only thing I can tell you is that the players reacted like any other human being would.”
“If you see that there’s a process to keep what happened from happening, If you see that if what happened happens anyways and that there’s supposedly another process an escape hatch.”
“Let’s say and both things fail, and you see your woman, or your mother, or a baby, being attacked, what would you do? You’d ask, Whether they’re going to punish the people who defended themselves?”
