Darwin Nunez joined Liverpool this summer from Benfica for a record fee of €100 million which makes him the most expensive signing in the history of the club.

Recall that in the just-concluded season, the Uruguayan forward had a stellar season at Benfica which attracted clubs across Europe to tussle for his signature.

He finished the 2021/22 season with a total of 34 goals in 41 games and helped the club to their first UEFA Champions League quarter-finals. Nunez played against Liverpool in the quarter-finals and his performance impressed Jurgen Klopp which forced the club to grab his signature.

Although the 22-year-old has the qualities of a traditional striker he has struggled sometimes in his career. Nunez told the Daily Mirror that one of the reasons he struggled was because of criticisms from social media.

Darwin Nunez added that those comments hurt him which made him sick. “I used to look at the [social media] networks a lot – but then I saw comments that I didn’t like. They actually made me feel sick”, the Uruguayan forward said.

“The criticism started to get me down and I had to speak to the national team psychologist Axel Ocampo. He helped me a lot, but the answer was simple. Now I don’t turn my cellphone on in the dressing room to read what is being said about me.

“I only turn my phone on after games to speak with my family and friends. I will only listen to the people who have been supportive.”

The 22-year-old is expected to be the replacement for Sadio Mane in the Liverpool team. Mane has recently agreed to a deal to join Bayern Munich. The Senegal striker has revealed that he doesn’t want to renew his contract with Liverpool and could be a Bayern Munich player this week.

The German champions are also searching for a replacement for Robert Lewandowski who is pushing for a move to Barcelona. Other European teams like Chelsea and PSG are trying to secure his services but he desires to play for Barcelona.

The Spanish giants are currently having financial issues which is the main reason why the deal haven’t been finalized. However, the club have submitted an improved offer to Bayern Munich which is likely to be accepted.
