Two-thirds of former football players, according to an intriguing survey, think Cristiano Ronaldo has had a greater career than Lionel Messi.
The controversy surrounding Ronaldo and Messi’s renowned playing careers has raged for almost 15 years.
But according to a poll conducted by The Athletic, former professionals believe Ronaldo has had a more successful career.
When asked to choose between the Portuguese superstar and the Argentine ace, a staggering 66% of former players chose the Portuguese great.
Of course, Ronaldo has excelled in Three separate leagues, having won league championships with Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Juventus in England, Spain, and Italy, respectively.
Wherever he has worked, he has been incredibly prolific, scoring goals at a startling pace. While Messi, who switched to Paris Saint-Germain in 2021, has spent the majority of his spectacular career in Spain with Barcelona.
In contrast to the Man United forward, who has five Ballon d’Or medals, the PSG player has an exceptional seven Ballon d’Or titles to his credit.
Jamie Carragher, a former Liverpool defender, and Toby Alderweireld, a former Tottenham defender, recently weighed in on the Ronaldo vs. Messi controversy.
Carragher referred to Messi as the “best” player to ever play the game of football and expressed the desire that Argentina will win the World Cup to further establish his status as the “greatest”.
He said: “I would love nothing more than in Qatar for Argentina and Lionel Messi to win the World Cup.
“Just to cement him, where I see him – but in everybody’s eyes, as the greatest player to have ever played the game.”
Alderweireld, who had previously played with both international stars, chose Messi.
“Yeah, I played against Ronaldo many times. Of course, his numbers don’t lie, but Messi was the best, because he is simply elusive”, Alderweireld said.
“You can’t get hold of him.”

Unlike his arch rival Lionel Messi, who has been on fire so far this season, Cristiano Ronaldo has not been in outstanding form.
Last summer, Messi and Ronaldo both switched teams in an effort to attempt something new and, most likely, succeed.
Despite playing for a tired Manchester United, Cristiano Ronaldo has a great season in 2021–2022. He scored 24 goals and provided three assists the previous year.
However, Lionel Messi’s debut season with PSG was disappointing; contrary to expectations that he would rule the league, the Argentine only managed to score 11 goals and provide 14 assists, which fell short of his high standards.
Messi has already scored more goals than Ronaldo in the 2022–2023 season. In nine games across all competitions, the PSG player has scored eight goals, while Ronaldo has only scored one goal—a penalty kick goal in the Europa League.
Even though both Ronaldo and Messi left La Liga and are no longer involved in the same domestic league, their admirers constantly compare them and passionately debate who is the greatest of all time.
Messi has been the superior player thus far in the 2022-2023 season.
