The sister of Cristiano Ronaldo, Elma Aveiro, has criticised coach Dos Santos for “humiliating” his brother in the game against Switzerland.

Portugal boss Dos Santos sparked reactions when he left the Portuguese star on the bench against Switzerland.

For the first time, Ronaldo was left on the bench in a knockout game for the Portugal national team. Also making headlines was Ronaldo’s replacement – Goncalo Ramos.

Goncalo Ramos scored a hat-trick against Switzerland, recording a hat-trick in his knockout debut for the team.

Before then, Ronaldo made history when he scored Portugal’s opening goal in the 2022 World Cup, converting a spot kick to give the team the lead in a 3-2 opening win against Ghana. He became the first player to score in five consecutive World Cups in the tournament’s history.

It was a good way to send a message to his critics after his fallout with Manchester United. However, things have not gone on well with five times Ballon d’Or winner after scoring the first goal.

He has failed to find the back of the net in subsequent games and was subbed off during the match against South Korea – a move which left him angrily spitting bitter remarks.

Dos Santos decided to leave Ronaldo on the bench following the incident, although he later said the decision not to start him in the Switzerland game was purely a tactical move.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo’s replacement Goncalo Ramos, 21, was on top of his game, scoring three goals. Ronaldo was brought on in the 74th minute, with little impact in the attack compared to Ramo’s energetic drive.

After the game, a furious Ronaldo was spotted ignoring fellow teammates while they clapped up the fans celebrating the win. He walked off the pitch down the exit tunnel to the glare of other players and the team’s crew.

After the incident, Portuguese media have flooded pics of Goncalo Ramos, who they tipped to lead the next young generation of Portuguese players.

Cristiano Ronaldo was largely anonymous in the papers, pointing to his dwindling popularity among Portuguese fans due to his poor performance.

While Ronaldo’s gesture in the game has continued to make headlines, his sister Elma Aveiro has blasted Portugal boss Dos Santos for “humiliating” his brother by leaving him on the bench.

Posting an image of the team on Instagram, Elma Aveiro wrote: “Today we are all together. If you think it has to be like this, I am here to see it.”

After one follower replied saying she ‘couldn’t believe’ Ronaldo had been dropped and called it a ‘major injustice,’ Elma posted another message.

“I don’t know why and I don’t understand it, but I’m sure we’ll have the answers from God later; he doesn’t fail, let’s see,” she wrote.

However, as it appeared Ronaldo wasn’t injured and was left on the bench, Elma again posted another Instagram story after the win, first congratulating her country.

She then continued: “Yes, Ronaldo is not eternal. Yes, Ronaldo won’t play forever. Unfortunately, he doesn’t score goals now; he’s old, Portugal doesn’t need Ronaldo [clapping emojis].

“We talked about what we heard, all that he did isn’t important, all that he did was forgotten.

“Now they ask for forgiveness, and they don’t need him. I will register that, and later we’ll talk.

“Rui Santos, what will he apologise for? Now we we can f*** who we want.”

Ronaldo’s partner, Georgina Rodriguez, was also in the stands to watch the game and would have been equally frustrated at the incident.

Portugal will face Morocco in a quarterfinal clash. As things stand, it is still unknown whether Ronaldo will make it to the starting lineup ahead of Goncalo Ramos after his stunning performance against Switzerland.
