Chelsea have taken a step toward having a backup goalkeeper after making an offer of $15 million for New England Revolution goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic.
Despite the link with former Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, Chelsea had seen Petrovic as their main target before the end of the transfer window.
It was revealed that the New England Revolution rejected bids from Premier League side Nottingham Forest and Nantes for the Serbian.
There was also interest from Manchester United, who want him to be the second choice behind Andre Onana.
The London club signed Roberto Sanchez from Brighton in order to provide competition for Kepa Arrizabalaga, but the injury to Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois made Kepa move to Real Madrid on loan.
Sanchez is expected to continue as Chelsea’s number one. But Chelsea cannot continue the season with only one strong goalkeeper at their disposal, with their third choice Marcus Bettinelli still out injured and Lucas Bergstrom likely to join another club on loan before the end of the transfer window.
Petrovic, who has proven to be a quality goalkeeper, can compete with Sanchez for first-team action.
He has been impressive for his club and country. Petrovic joined the New England Revolution from the Serbian football club Cukaricki in 2022.
His contract with the New England Revolution ends in 2025, with an option to extend it. The Serbian goalkeeper kept seven clean sheets in 22 Major League Soccer appearances this season.
Petrovic finished as the runner-up in the 2022 MLS goalkeeper of the year competition.
The Serbian was named a 2023 MLS All-Star, and he is currently the goalkeeper with the highest saves in Major League Soccer with 99 saves and a 78.6% save percentage.
