Even though FC Barcelona are experiencing an economic crisis, they have added many top players to their transfer list. These players cut across Europe and current Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta is among the options for the club’s defense area.

Other players on the list include; Bernardo Silva and Gabriel Jesus of Manchester City, Robert Lewandowski of Bayern Munich, Darwin Nunez of Benfica, and another Chelsea defender, Andreas Christensen. The deal with Andreas Christensen is presumed to be completed and will be announced soon.

However, Azpilicueta’s contract with The Blues expired this summer and he’s yet to extend it. This is why Barcelona is interested in him and he could come as a free transfer.

Azpilicueta had a deal in the current Chelsea contract which will make it possible for the club to extend his stay by a year if he played up to 30 games for the London giants. He, however, played more than 30 but talks about his future haven’t started.

Since taking over Chelsea’s captain armband, Azpilicueta has been good at coordinating the team. He led them to their second Champions League title in 2021. Multiple sources have revealed that the current Barcelona coach, Xavi Hernandez is so much interested in adding Azpilicueta to his team.

Xavi sees him as a perfect addition to help them challenge for titles next season after ending last season with no trophy. On the other side, Chelsea have lost two defenders already as Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger are no longer with the club.

This means that letting Azpilicueta go will be a hard nut to crack for the two times Champions League winners. The club is still reluctant to let the Spanish defender leave this summer even as Barcelona are having financial issues.

Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel is not ready to let go of Azpilicueta and is confident that he can give him enough reasons to stay back. However, he doesn’t want to force the defender to stay if he’s not interested again.

Azpilicueta seems to have his mind at Barcelona but Tuchel is trying to make him have a change of mind. Reports in England claim that Chelsea will get down with Azpilicueta for more talks after the Nations League matches are completed.

He would be a solution to Barcelona’s problems at right-back and a significant boost in terms of filling the leadership deficit at the club.
