The Confederation of Africa Football CAF have debunked reports that the 2025 Africa Cup has been postponed.

“Reports on AFCON 2025 are untrue. The CAF Executive Committee will meet, deliberate and make a decision on the AFCON 2025 dates. CAF will thereafter issue an official statement on the matter,” CAF said via its X handle on Wednesday.

CAF statement came after the African football’s governing body Secretary Veron Mosengo-Omba told the BBC that the tournament has been shifted till January 2026 due to the FIFA Club World Cup.

“We can play after the Club World Cup, but is this good for the interests of the players who have played all the season and then they travel to America to play (and then) immediately come to play AFCON?” Mosengo-Omba said.

Futballnews understands that 2025 AFCON is yet to have a fixed date due to uncertainties over the impact of the FIFA Club World Cup in the US in 2025.

We reported earlier some domestic league administrators have threatened to boycott the maiden edition of FIFA’s newest competition.

English and Spanish football league authorities have slammed the competition as unnecessary and will impact the players negatively.

When Mosengo-Omba spoke of the postponement of the AFRICA Cup of Nations, it was widely believed it was due to the effect of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

Orchestrated by FIFA president Gianni Infantino, it will be the first time FIFA will hold a 32-team club tournament. The competition is scheduled to kick off from June 15 to July 13, 2025.

Meanwhile, all fingers are now crossed on what will be CAF’s next move following the potential clash of the 2025 edition of the footballing showpiece with the FIFA Club World Cup.
