Lukaku expressed dissatisfaction with his role at the club and expressed a desire to return to Inter Milan in the near future in an interview with Sky Italy that was recorded a few weeks ago but aired on Thursday.

Lukaku, 28, has scored in each of his last two Premier League appearances – against Aston Villa and Brighton – since rejoining the Chelsea squad following a positive test for Covid-19.

Lukaku’s future at Chelsea is uncertain following his remarks in which he expressed dissatisfaction with his role at Stamford Bridge. Thomas Tuchel was unimpressed, describing Lukaku’s remarks as ‘just not helpful’.

    Romelu Lukaku’s observations

“Physically, I am in good health. However, I am dissatisfied with the situation at Chelsea. Tuchel has chosen to play a different system – I will not surrender, I will be professional. Although I am dissatisfied with the situation, I am a professional – and I cannot give up now” Lukaku stated in an interview with Sky Sports.

    Tuchel’s response

“I dislike it because it generates unnecessary noise. It is simply not beneficial” Tuchel responded to a question regarding Lukaku’s interview.

“On the other hand, we don’t want to exaggerate the situation. You are well aware of how easy it is to take lines out of context. It’s very easy to shorten lines and create headlines, only to discover that they’re not nearly as bad as they appear and may not be what the author intended.”

He won Serie A under Antonio Conte and re-established himself as one of the world’s best strikers during his time in Italy, after struggling at Manchester United.

In his interview, the Belgium international was effusive in his praise for Inter and even hinted at a desire to return, just four months after leaving the San Siro.

Lukaku has five Premier League goals in 13 appearances despite battling an ankle injury and Covid.

Chelsea are currently second in the Premier League, 11 points behind league leaders Manchester City, following a difficult December.

They have kept just one clean sheet this month and have drawn three of their last four games, allowing City to extend their lead at the top.

With a win over Liverpool, they would open up a four-point lead over the Reds, who are currently third following an equally disappointing festive period.

Jurgen Klopp, manager of Liverpool, will be absent from the away dugout due to a suspected positive Covid test.
