Werder Bremen stunned Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga by coming back from two goals down and scoring twice in stoppage time.
Borussia Dortmund’s winning streak in the Bundesliga came to an end on Saturday as it gave up a league-high three goals in the 89th minute to lose 3-2 to Werder Bremen.
With a 2-0 lead, Dortmund was on track for its third victory in three league games. The visitors then made an incredible comeback to shock the home squad, becoming the first Bundesliga team to score three goals so late in a game.
English defender Lee Buchanan got things going by netting what appeared to be a late consolation. For the marketed visitors, it turned out to be just the beginning.
Two minutes before Scotland forward Oliver Burke scored the game-winning goal and sparked loud jubilation among the visiting fans, Niklas Schmidt equalized in the third minute of added time.
Ole Werner, the Werder Bremen coach, composed himself and stated, “Without getting into details, what occurs in the changing room stays there, but the mood was very, very positive.”
Werner, who is often calm, had been ecstatically punching the air. Bremen recorded its first victory upon its return to the Bundesliga. fully deserving.
For the majority of the game, Dortmund was outplayed.
Nevertheless, long-range goals from Raphael Guerreiro in the 77th and Julian Brandt in stoppage time gave Dortmund a 2-0 lead. The first and second shots on goal for the home team resulted in the two goals.
Gio Reyna of Dortmund entered the game in the 62nd minute for his first competitive outing since April 8, when the American suffered a right hamstring injury again in Stuttgart after less than two minutes.
Bremen, who had the greatest opportunities of the first half through Marvin Ducksch, back at his hometown club, appeared to lack ideas against Dortmund’s much-heralded offense.
However, Bremen-born midfielder Brandt scored just before halftime after dodging a few opponents outside the penalty area and firing inside the far post.
The superior team, Bremen, had a penalty appeal rejected before Anthony Jung was stopped by a key block from Niko Schlotterbeck.
With 30 minutes left, Reyna was one of three replacements made by Borussia Dortmund coach Edin Terzi.
But Werner’s adjustments had a considerably more significant impact. After Guerreiro made it 2-0, Buchanan, Schmidt, and Burke entered the game in the 70th and 81st minutes, respectively. Everyone succeeded.
“It was a well-earned defeat. We didn’t play well against them today,” said coach Edin Terzić of Dortmund. “We gave a pretty subpar performance. Even yet, you must win the game even though you were leading 2-0 with eight minutes remaining.
“And the way we gave away the goals was just plain dumb. Such a pain. Yes, that is the way things are. We are left holding nothing.”
