Borussia Dortmund Confirm Exit Of Club Legend Mats Hummels

Borussia Dortmund have confirmed the departure of Mats Hummels, whose contract at the German club is set to expire on June 30, 2024.

Hummels spent about 13 years cumulatively at the club across two spells, having joined the club initially on loan from Bayern Munich on January 3, 2008. 

Mats Hummels subsequently left the Bavarian giants to join the Black and Yellows permanently on July 1, 2009, for a fee of €4.2 million.

Hummels returned to Bayern Munich on July 1, 2016, joining his boyhood club for a fee of €35 million, before re-signing for Borussia Dortmund on July 1, 2019, for a fee of €30.5 million.

Borussia Dortmund Confirm Departure Of Mats Hummels

Confirming the exit of the club great, Borussia Dortmund put out a statement on their website which reads:

“After 13 successful years in total, Borussia Dortmund center-back Mats Hummels (35) is to leave the club.

“This decision follows discussions between BVB Managing Director for Sport Lars Ricken, Sporting Director Sebastian Kehl, and Mats Hummels this week.”

Borussia Dortmund also shared the lengthy statement of the German defender via their website.

The statement reads: “Borussia Dortmund fans, my time at the Black & Yellows has come to an end after 13 years in total. 

“It was a huge honor and a joy for me to play for BVB for such a long time, and to be almost ever-present on the journey from 13th place in the table in January 2008 to what Borussia Dortmund represents today.”

Hummels also expressed that Borussia Dortmund and its fans are “special”, whilst also thanking the club’s staff alongside the “fantastic coaches and teammates” he was privileged to work and play alongside.

Borussia Dortmund Sporting Director Sebastian Kehl also had great words to say about Mats Hummels, with the German football administrator saying: 

“In Mats Hummels, we are without doubt losing an outstanding personality, maybe one of the last of its kind in football. 

“Mats hasn’t just had a huge impact on Borussia Dortmund throughout his career – he has also taken the art of being a center-back to a whole new level around the world.”

Kehl also appreciated Hummels for his contributions to the team, whilst also wishing him all the best for the future.

“I would like to thank him for his passion, for his will to win, and also for his idiosyncrasies. Everyone at BVB wishes Mats all the very best in his professional and personal future.”

His departure comes about 24 hours after boss Edin Terzic also left the club following “a joint discussion”.

It appears the Black and Yellows are going through a rebuilding process, occasioned by the exit of these top stars, with another club great in Marco Reus also leaving the Signal Iduna Park at the end of the 2023/24 season.
