    Bernardo Silva has signed a new contract extension with Manchester City ending weeks of rumors linking him to an imminent exit from the club.

    Silva had one year remaining in his Manchester City contract and was linked to a move away from the club this summer when the two parties did not settle on a new contract.

    After netting seven times, delivering eight assists in 55 appearances for Manchester City last summer and helping the team clinch a historic treble, Manchester City were not ready to lose Bernardo Silva.

    With Riyad Mahrez and IIkay Gundogan missing from City’s midfield options this season, Manchester City needed to keep Silva amid interest from European rivals.

    Bernardo Silva has now penned a one-year contract extension with Manchester City. His current deal was set to expire in 2025. Silva will now stay at Etihad till 2026.

    Silva’s contract extension is a major boost to Manchester City who have lost Kevin De Bruyne to a harmstring issue and will be without the Belgian for four months.

    Bernardo Silva joined Manchester City in 2017 from Monaco, a year after Pep Guardiola took over the dugout at Etihad as new manager.

    Silva signed a five-year contract with Manchester City for an undisclosed transfer fee. However, sources close to Manchester City revealed the Portuguese signed for City for €50 with add-ons taking it to €70m.

    While Manchester City announced the signing of Bernardo Silva on 26 May 2017, the Portuguese midfielder joined the club on 17 July 2017.

    Silva hit the ground running in his Manchester City career. He made 53 appearances for a Manchester City across all competitions in his debut season, helping the team win their first Premier League title under Pep Guardiola.

    In his second season, Bernardo Silva closed in on his debut appearance stats for Manchester City, making 51 appearances for the club, and hitting double-digit assists (14) and goals (13).

    Silva was credited for Manchester City’s Premier League triumph in 2018/19 season. He stepped into the shoes of Kevin de Bruyne, who was sidelined for majority of the season due to injury.

    Silva has only missed out on the Premier League title once in his six years at Manchester City. He has won five Premier League titles, including the three recent consecutive Premier League League titles starting from 2020/21 season.

    He has won two FA Cup, 4 EFL Cup, two Community Shield, and a Champions League trophy.

    This summer, Bernardo Silva was not insulated from rumors linking him to an exit from the club with Barcelona, PSG, and Al Hilal leading the list of clubs eyeing a move for the player. With his one-year contract extension, the 29-year-old will take his stint with Manchester City to nine years.
