    Benfica have proven to be the kings of transfer market in the 21st century after making about £617m in total income.

    The Portuguese side are currently the top of the list of most profitable clubs since the new millennium – beating rivals Porto to first place.

    The club have earned well over £1billion in player sales in the last decade alone in the transfer window.

    However, they have also spent about £756million since 2000, but they are still the most profitable clubs thanks to a total income of £1.4bn.

    This leaves the Portuguese side with a profit of about £617m, around £42m higher than the next best club side which is FC Porto.

    According to reports by Transfer Market, Benfica, Porto and Ajax have raised more than a billion pounds in player sales in the 21st century.

    The three clubs have all made an overall profit of more than £500m, with only Sporting Lisbon and Lille close to that figure.

    However, other teams on the list that have made profits too include RB Salzburg and Udinese, who have sold a massive 970 players in the 21st century and brought in £316m profit.

    Salzburg joined this list in the last four years thanks to high-profile sales such as Dominik Szobozslai, Patson Daka, Brendan Aaronson and Karim Adeyemi.

    Benfica are top of the list for one major transfer thanks to the capture of Joao Felix by Atletico Madrid for £113m in 2019.

    Also, Porto made sales in January 2022 too, as they club sold winger Luis Diaz to EPL side Liverpool for £50m.

    However, Benfica and Porto have sold about 778 and 732 players respectively since 2000, which include loaned players as well.

    Ligue 1 side Lille have looked to maximize profits on each sale after selling Nicolas Pepe to EPL side Arsenal for £72m in 2019.

    Also, in the same list we have French side Lyon round off the top ten with Dinamo Zagreb in ninth place.

    Brazilian sides Santos and Sao Paulo have also made good use of the transfer market funds and all together, the 10 clubs have made £3.9bn in player sales.
