Bas Dost of NEC Nijmegen and former Netherlands forward collapsed on the field during an Eredivisie match which resulted in the game being suspended.
What happened to Bas Dost?
The player reportedly collapsed in the center circle towards the end of the match against AZ Alkmaar on Sunday, 29th of October.
Players from both teams were left visibly confused as they gathered around the 34-year-old Dutchman to give him privacy.
Paramedics rushed to the event to deliver medical contributions while the center referee halted the match, which was later suspended.
NEC Nijmegen were leading the game 2-1 after 91 minutes of play before the incident happened, with Bas Dost scoring the opening goal and registering an assist in his side’s second goal.
However, both NEC Nijmegen and AZ Alkmaar have already announced that the Dutch player is conscious.
The former Sporting CP player was even able to send an optimistic message by holding his arm up while his name was being chanted in unison around the AFAS stadium.
Football insiders confirmed that the player gave a thumbs-up from the stretcher as he was taken off the field while he received a standing ovation from every section of the stadium.
Meanwhile, no information has been made public at the time of writing on Dost’s situation or as it relates to the cause of his collapse.
After the incident, Nijmegen released a statement on their official social media handle which reads; “Bas Dost is conscious and is taken off the field. The match has been stopped”.
AZ Alkmaar also gave an optimistic update, writing on X (formerly Twitter) that; “Bas Dost is fortunately conscious. Wishing you a lot of recovery and strength, Bas”.
The match was canceled with NEC Nijmegen just minutes away from beating the Dutch giants 2-1 away from home. But the game will be continued at a later date.
Bas Dost’s stats this season
Dost had scored two goals so far this season before registering his third for the visitors against AZ Alkmaar before his health issue.
He has previously represented the Dutch national team 18 times, scoring one goal and dishing out three assists.
He has played for several European clubs sides, which includes Germany’s VfL Wolfsburg.
He won the Belgium League twice for Club Brugge and has collected Golden Boot awards in the Dutch League with Heerenveen and Portugal with Sporting CP respectively.
Speaking after the incident, Bas Dost said in a message shared on NEC’s social media page; “The help I received on the field was fantastic”.
The Dutchman added: “I’m in the hospital now and I feel good. Thanks for all the support”.
