    One of the Italian football clubs that play exciting football is Atalanta Bergamasca Calcio, popularly known Atalanta BC. The club plays in the top flight of Italian football, Serie A and is based in Bergamo, Lombardy.

    Atalanta BC was established by some Swiss students who always train in the gymnasium of Liceo Classico Paolo Sarpi in 1907. The club nicknamed The Nerazzurri and the Orobici shares the same team colors and nickname with Inter Milan. The two clubs are based in Lombardy and share similar features.

    The club president is Antonio Percassi, a former Italian footballer and businessman while the coach is Gian Piero Gasperini, also a former Italian football player. Atalanta’s traditional colors are Blue and Black. The club plays in blue-and-black vertically striped shirts, black shorts, and black socks which is similar to Inter Milan’s jersey.

    Atalanta plays its home games in Atleti Azzurri d’Italia which has a capacity of 21,300 seats. The club has played in the lower league for the most part of their history and gained promotion from Serie B in 2010/11 to play in Serie A. The club lifted the Coppa Italia in 1963 and got to the semi-final of the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1988 during their days in Serie B.

    According to reports, the game was described as the best ever performance by a non-first division club in a major UEFA competition. Atalanta also shares the feat with Cardiff City. The Italian club also featured in four seasons of the UEFA Cup, now called the UEFA Europa League. Atalanta reached the quarter-finals in the 1990–91 season.

    Atalanta finished 3rd in the 2018–19 Serie A season and qualified for the UEFA Champions League in 2019–20. The club got the chance to play in the competition for the first time in their history. The club’s position on the league table represented the highest finish in the club’s history.

    The club is by far the most consistent among Italian clubs not based in a regional capital, hence the name Regina delle provinciali (queen of the provincial clubs). Atalanta has played 58 times in Serie A, 28 times in Serie B and only once in Serie C.

    Atalanta pays €36 million on salaries this season and the club is the thirteenth-highest wage bill in Serie A. Juventus is the only Italian club that pays has the highest wage bill: €294 million, followed by Inter Milan (€139 million), AS Roma (€125 million) and AC Milan (€115 million). All the clubs will pay a combine €1360 million this season in Italy, which is the highest number in the last decade.

    The highest paid-paid players in Atalanta are captain Papu Gómeza and defender Duvan Zapata. Both players earn €64,000 per-week.
