The manager of Tottenham Hotspur, Antonio Conte has stressed that his club’s captain, Harry Kane, remains the focal point of the Premier League club despite his outburst last summer.
Recall that the 28-year-old English striker tried to leave Tottenham Hotspur to a club where he could win major titles since he has not been able to win any major title at Spurs.
Tottenham were so close to losing the England international to Manchester City that were ready to offer Spurs over £100 million for the services of Kane. However, the owner of Spurs, Daniel Levy, refused to let him go.
When it was obvious that he would not be able to leave the club last summer, he decided to announce to the club’s fans that he would stay back at Spurs this season.
At the start of the season, Harry Kane could not score consistently as he used to until the arrival of Antonio Conte. Months after Conte arrived, Kane was still struggling to score as much as he used to until recently.
So far this season, Kane has managed to score 11 goals and has provided 2 assists in 25 games in all competitions. The 28-year-old English striker scored three goals in the Spurs’ last four Premier League games under the watch of coach Antonio Conte.
Ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s visit to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea in the Carabao Cup semi-final, coach Antonio Conte admitted that he understands why Kane was so frustrated by Spurs’ inability to win titles. He however added that Kane is needed in the club’s effort to win major titles.
The coach said: “I knew the situation in the summer and, when Harry decided to stay in Tottenham, I found a player involved in this project … if we want to think to build something to win, Harry must be a starting point.
“I understand Harry’s situation. When you finish your career, you can see your appearances and the teams you made them for but, at the same time, it’s right to see what you have won. This is important, especially for the top, top players.
“I think that when Tottenham brought me here they wanted to send a signal outside, and maybe also to our players … We have to try to build a situation where we are all involved and to try to create a situation that we can be competitive to try to win.”
Antonio Conte to push Tottenham Hotspur closer to winning a major title
For over 13 years, Tottenham Hotspur have not won a major title. Hence, the arrival of coach Antonio Conte is expected to change the narrative.
Later tonight, Conte is expected to prove that he can lead Tottenham Hotspur to a title win by beating Chelsea in the Carabao Cup semi-final. He would depend on the goalscoring prowess of Harry Kane to break Chelsea’s defense.
A victory over Chelsea would qualify Spurs for the final of the Carabao Cup. If that happens, it would mark the second time in 35 games that Tottenham Hotspur defeated Chelsea at the Bridge.
The Carabao Cup semi-final game between Chelsea and Tottenham is expected to kick off at 20:45 at Stamford Bridge later tonight, January 5, 2022.
