Antoine Griezmann gets a new clause in his contract as Barcelona and Atletico Madrid reach agreement after a long, drawn-out saga.
In order to acquire the World Cup winner in 2019, Barcelona paid Atletico his £107 million release clause.
After only two seasons, he returned to the Wanda Metropolitano and signed a two-year loan agreement.
According to numerous reports, the two agreed that Atletico would have to permanently sign Griezmann for €40 million if he participated in 50% of the games for which he was available.
Atletico started reducing the amount of time the Frenchman played this season after seeing him in 80% of games during his rookie campaign.
Up until the El Clasico loss to Real Madrid on September 18, a curious pattern had developed in which Griezmann entered every game after the 60-minute mark.
Barca was rumored to be contemplating a lawsuit because they felt cheated.
However, the issue has been settled as stated by Joan Laporta, the president of Barca. A lesser guaranteed amount of €20 million will be paid by Atletico, plus an additional €4 million in add-ons.
In the event that Atletico decides to sell the player in the future, the Blaugrana will also get more money.
“It’s done and it’s a good deal – we’ll receive €20m fixed and €4m in add-ons,” Laporta said.
“There is another clause in the player’s sale agreement is that if Atletico Madrid decides to sell the player in the future, they will have to pay us the difference that remains up to the €40m that was set before.”
Griezmann has three goals this season in 10 appearances across all competitions. The former Real Sociedad player, according to Graeme Bailey of 90 Min, has agreed to a new contract that would keep him at Atleti until 2026.
