The former Ajax shotstopper manned the post for the Indomitable Lions as they got off the mark with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Mauritius but it wasn’t looking good with 10 minutes left to play as he hobbled off the pitch and had to be subbed off.

Cameroon FA, FECAFOOT have confirmed Onana sustained an injury on his pubic region and will not be able to feature for the team in their next 2026 World Cup Qualifiers fixture against Libya.

Following the injury, Onana has now exited Cameroon squad and is set to return to Manchester United where a further assessment of the injury will be done by the club.

It remains to be seen how long he will be sidelined as United are yet to examine the extent of the injury.

However, there is an air of optimism he may be available for club next weekend for Premier League action.

We reported earlier United were bracing for Andre Onana’s lengthy absence from the club due to 2023 AFCON which will kick off in January 2024.

Onana was expected to miss up to six weeks of action away with Cameroon for AFCON hence Erik ten Hag was considering a make-shift goalkeeper for the Cameroonian.

Former goalkeeper and free agent David de Gea was linked to a return on a short-term deal before a fresh report emerged that ten Hag was considering handing Onana backup Altay Bayindir a first team role.

Manchester United signed Andre Onana Inter Milan for £55m as a replacement for David de Gea who was axed off the club by Erik ten Hag when his contract expired.

Onana’s benchmark since joining United have left much to be desired. He has made 18 appearances for the club in all competitions keeping only 6 clean sheets.
