Manchester United have completed the signing of Andre Onana from Inter Milan for a transfer fee worth £47.2 million.

Onana has penned a five-year deal with the Red Devils, with the option of a further year, meaning he will remain with the club until at least the summer of 2028.

Confirming his arrival to the club, Manchester United put out a statement on their website which reads: 

“Andre Onana has joined Manchester United on a contract running until June 2028, with the option of a further year, subject to international clearance.”

The 27-year-old has also expressed his delight at joining the English giants, saying he is excited by the chance to work with Ten Hag once again.

He said: “I am excited by the opportunity to work again with Erik ten Hag, and I can’t wait to play my part in the success. I know he is determined to deliver at this great football club.”

Onana made 24 appearances in the Serie A last season, making 62 saves and amassing 8 clean sheets.

The Cameroonian also made 11 appearances in the Champions League, making 47 saves and accumulating an impressive 8 clean sheets.

The 27-year-old will reunite with Erik Ten Hag, who he played and developed his craft under at Dutch giants Ajax.

He is the second arrival to Manchester United this summer, having already signed Mason Mount from Chelsea.

Andre Onana is set to fill the big shoes of David De Gea, who confirmed his departure from the club on the 7th of July, 2023, ending his 12-year-stay at the club.

The Cameroonian has been lauded highly for his ball playing abilities and Erik Ten Hag made him a priority target this summer due to his excellent attributes.

Bruno Fernandes named as Manchester United captain

Meanwhile, Bruno Fernandes has been made the new captain of Manchester United, after Harry Maguire was stripped of the armband on the 16th of July, 2023.

Fernandes was captain of Manchester United for the majority of last season, after Harry Maguire lost his place in the starting lineup of Manchester United.

The Red Devils confirmed the information via a statement on the club website which reads: “Bruno Fernandes has been named as the new club captain of Manchester United. 

“The Portuguese midfielder has already worn the armband for United on numerous occasions and Erik ten Hag has confirmed that he will now lead the team on a permanent basis.”

Bruno Fernandes made 59 appearances for the Old Trafford club last season and he captained the club on 45 occasions.

He made 37 appearances in the Premier League last term, while Harry Maguire made 16 appearances, starting only 8 of those matches.

Why did Ten Hag choose Bruno Fernandes as captain?

Reports from Manchester United are indicating that Fernandes became Ten Hag’s preferred choice as captain due to his outstanding leadership abilities.

Additionally, Ten Hag is also impressed by his remarkable knowledge of football and his quality prowess as a communicator.

The Dutchman is believed to highly value Fernandes’ energetic and passionate self, which a section of fans interpret many times as being ill-tempered.

Bruno Fernandes scored 14 goals and provided 15 assists in his 59 appearances for Manchester United last term, assisting the club to win the Carabao Cup, ending their nearly 6 years trophyless run.

The 28-year-old joined Manchester United from Sporting Lisbon in 2020 for a reported fee of £46.5 million plus £21.1 million in performance related add-ons.

He will be rallying his teammates and galvanizing them to achieve success as they will be competing on all fronts next season.
