Aguero Emerges January’s Player of the Month After Becoming highest-scoring overseas player

    Manchester City forward Sergio Aguero has emerged as Premier League Player of the Month for January after scoring six goals and becoming the league’s all-time leading overseas goalscorer. The 31-year-old, who joined City in 2011 from Atletico Madrid, broke Thiery Henry’s record against Aston Villa on January 12.

    The Argentine scored a hat-trick to take his tally to 177 league goals to surpass the Arsenal legend, who found the net 175 times. The hat-trick was Aguero’s 12th in his Premier League career, taking that record outright having previously shared it with Alan Shearer, who remains the competition’s most prolific player with 260 goals.

    The 30-year-old won the award with the most votes to peep Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker, Watford midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure, Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish, Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson, Leicester City’s Ayoze Perez and Southampton centre-back Jack Stephens to the award.

    The City striker again broke another Premier League record by winning the award for the seventh time to overtake Steven Gerrard and Harry Kane, who both won it six times in the all-time list. Aguero becomes the first City player to win the award this season and in 2020. He won the award in October 2013, November 2014, January 2016, April 2016, January 2018, February 2019 and January 2020.

    Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold won the award in December while his team-mate Sadio Mane won it in November. Norwich striker Teemu Pukki, Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and Leicester’s Jamie Vardy.have also won the award this season.

    Aguero’s six goals included a hat-trick in the 6-1 thrashing of Aston Villa. He also scored a brace in the 2-2 home draw with Crystal Palace and the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win away to Sheffield United.

    Also, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was also named Premier League manager of the month for January after his side set a new record for most wins (5) in a single season to continue Liverpool’s unbeaten run.

    Also, Brighton midfielder Alireza Jahanbakhsh’s stunning acrobatic goal against Chelsea has emerged as the Goal of the Month for January.
