Achraf Hakimi, a defender for Paris Saint-Germain, has been charged with rape, French authorities announced on Friday.
According to the prosecutor’s office in the Paris district of Nanterre, Hakimi was questioned by authorities looking into rape claims on Thursday. After that, he was charged by an investigative judge and put under court control.
The 24-year-old woman who claims she was raped by Hakimi on Saturday at his house in a suburb of Paris is barred from communicating with the Moroccan national team member. According to prosecutors, Hakimi is free to depart French territory.
Defender Hakimi, who was born in Spain, assisted Morocco in becoming the first African nation to go to the World Cup semifinals last year. On Friday, he was spotted working out with PSG.
On Monday, prosecutors will began their initial inquiry.
PSG representatives are silent, and Hakimi hasn’t responded to the charge in the media. No comments have been provided by the player’s attorney.
On Monday, Hakimi made an appearance on stage at the FIFA Awards in Paris. He was honored as a member of the player-selected men’s all-star squad and introduced to great applause.
According to the prosecution office, the Moroccan international has been detained by police and is not permitted to speak to the accused victim.
Although neither Hakimi nor PSG have spoken publicly on the probe, reports have it that the player vigorously refutes all charges brought against him.
Fanni Colin, the attorney for Hakimi, declared that he would completely assist with the investigation and work to clear his client’s name.
