AC Milan have reportedly included Olivier Giroud among their goalkeepers on the club’s official team list after the player’s noble save against Genoa on Saturday, 7th of October.
The former Arsenal striker was made a showstopper by the Italian outfit after the French International helped his club side take the top position in the Serie A.
What has happened?
The former Chelsea frontman took the place of Mike Maignan in the middle of the goalpost after the keeper was sent off in the 7th minute of loss time and Giroud did excellently well to secure a 1-0 win sitting on top of the League table with two points ahead of city rivals Inter Milan.
However, after the final whistle was blown, there were massive jubilations and the Italian club decided to honor the French striker by adding him to the team list of goalkeepers and also by trading customized jerseys with his name written on the back.
Giroud was subbed on in the middle of the second half at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris Stadium to help Milan destroy a relentless Genoa side.
The 37-year-old was crucial to holding off a stoppage time blocking from the home team after former Chelsea player Christian Pulisic netted the lone goal in the 87th minute to put the visitors ahead.
Olivier Giroud could only be noticed as Albert Gudmundsson scraped a free kick off the crossbar straight after Maignan was awarded a red card and the striker pulled on the goalie gloves and jersey.
Genoa’s goalkeeper Josep Martinez was also sent off for rushing out of his position twice as he denied Genoa and assured Milan took the three points back to their home, San Siro.
What AC Milan said about Olivier Giroud
Following Giroud’s save and effort in the game, AC Milan came out on Sunday, 8th of October to release a statement on their media page.
They said; “Last night Olivier Giroud became part of Milan history by courageously defending the Milan goal in the final minutes of our match with Genoa”.
“The club has decided to honor his performance in our last line of defense by putting him on the list of goalkeepers”.
The San Siro outfit also urged their supporters to purchase a reproduction goalkeeper jersey with Giroud NO. 9 on the back as a tribute to an excellent ending to Saturday’s close triumph.
The former Arsenal striker was filmed on Milan’s media page smiling in a goalie kit, which he said on Saturday night that he’ll frame due to a perfect record of a clean sheet on his seven league appearances in the 2023/2024 campaign.
AC Milan are currently in the first place in Serie A after they have gathered 21 points, having won seven of their previous eight games in the League so far this season.
Inter Milan, their city rival sits in second place with two points behind the league leaders. Juventus occupies the third position with four points behind AC Milan.
