Manchester City central midfielder, Phil Foden has been declared the winner of the 2021-2022 Premier League young player of the season.
This is the second time in two successive seasons that the 21-year-old English footballer has been voted the best young player in the most competitive league in the world.
Even though Phil Foden did not play football in the first month of the 2021-2022 season, he was able to play a major role in Manchester City’s smooth run in the Premier League.
The 21-year-old English midfielder who played just 27 Premier League games so far this season has been able to score 9 goals and provided five assists to match his performance in the 2020-2021 season.
Just like Foden’s performance helped Manchester City to win the Premier League title last season, his performance in the outgoing season is on the verge of landing City their second successive Premier League title.
Note that on the last day of the 2021-2022 Premier League campaign (May 16 at 16:00) Manchester City will host Aston Villa, a club that is being coached by Liverpool’s legend, Steven Gerrard.
City need to beat Villa to successfully defend the league title. If Villa mange to beat City, and Liverpool beat Wolves on the same day, Liverpool would be confirmed winners of the league this season.
Hence, coach Pep Guardiola of Manchester City will bank on the talent of a dynamic player like Phil Foden in City’s attempt to keep the Premier League title in the Blue side of Manchester.
Why Phil Foden was voted as the best young player in the Premier League for the 2021-2022 season?
Since Phil Foden was promoted to Manchester City senior team on July 1, 2017, he has been able to establish himself as one of the most prominent players in coach Pep Guardiola’s team. This season is no different.
As mentioned earlier, out of the 37 Premier League games Manchester City have played this season, Foden has managed to play just 27 of them due to an injury he suffered earlier in the season.
Despite that, the English midfielder has scored 9 league goals and provided five assists in the league this season. While in all competitions, Foden has played 44 games in which he scored 14 goals and provided 11 assists.
Asides from goals and assists, Phil Foden has created 37 chances for his Manchester City teammates this season. He has also completed 32 dribbles in the league this season.
More so, the England international who has made 15 appearances and scored two goals for England since he made his debut on September 5, 2020, made 623 successful passes into the opposition’s half this season.
After he was voted the best young player in the Premier League this season, Foden took to his Instagram page and wrote: “Young Player of the Season again! I’m honored. A huge thanks to all who voted for me, it means a lot!”
Note that Phil Foden who earns £100,000 per week at Manchester City has until June 30, 2024, before his contract with the Premier League club expires. His current transfer market value is €90 million.
