Brentford attacking midfielder, Christian Eriksen has confirmed that he is still a fan of Tottenham Hotspur after helping his current team to draw 0-0 with Spurs.

The 30-year-old Danish footballer who survived a cardiac arrest in 2021 which almost ended his life and football career said he hopes Tottenham Hotspur grab a UEFA Champions League spot this season.

On Saturday, April 23, 2022, Christian Eriksen had the opportunity of playing against Tottenham Hotspur for the first time since he left the club on January 28, 2020.

Recall that on the said date, Inter Milan paid Tottenham Hotspur €27 million for the services of Eriksen after spending almost seven years at the Premier League club.

Unfortunately for Inter Milan, Christian Eriksen had to receive a cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) to keep his heart functioning which is against the law in Italy. Hence, he had to agree to terminate his contract with the Italian club.

After months without a club, Brentford gave him a six-month deal that will expire on June 30, 2022. Since he joined the club, he has helped the club to win five games and record a draw.

After Tottenham Hotspur’s 0-0 draw with Brentford, Eriksen who received a warm welcome at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium on Saturday told reporters that he wants to see Spurs in the Champions League next season.

Recall that in 2019, Christian Eriksen helped Tottenham Hotspur to get to the final of the UEFA Champions League. Unfortunately, he was unable to help the club to win it. The team lost the final to Liverpool.

“Obviously it was the first time playing against Spurs since I left so it would be special, but I’m okay with a draw”, Eriksen said after Brentford’s 0-0 draw with Spurs on Saturday.

“I was extra (nervous)…but it was lovely.

Tottenham Hotspur are currently sitting on the 5th spot on the league table with 58 points in 33 games, two points below 4th placed Arsenal. Arsenal need to lose a game while Spurs need to win all their remaining games this season to stand a chance of grabbing the 4th spot.

When asked whether he wants to see Spurs finish in the top four, Eriksen said: “Of course. I’m still a Spurs fan. I hope they get in the Champions League.”

After the 0-0 draw with Tottenham Hotspur, the coach of Brentford, Thomas Frank told reporters that he hopes he could keep Christian Eriksen at the Premier League club a bit longer but such a decision would be made at the end of the season.

As mentioned earlier, Eriksen has helped Brentford to win five games and drew a game. The Denmark international has scored a goal and provided two assists in seven games for Brentford.

Unfortunately, his contract with Brentford will expire on June 30, 2022. But that might not be the end of the journey between him and 11th-placed Brentford as the club’s coach is hopeful of keeping him beyond this summer.

“I would love to say that I am confident, I am very positive and very hopeful that he will stay but it will be a decision at the end of the season,” coach Thomas Frank said.

“I will do what I can but it’s down to Christian, where it’s like everything if you decide to go to one club or another, you buy that house or another house, you take that job or another job.

“There must be pros and cons and I always say if you make it an eighty-two decision, where you have eight pros and two cons, then you are in a good position.”
