Julian Nagelsmann, Bayern Munich’s manager, says that after his team lost to Villarreal in the Champions League quarter-finals, he got 450 death threats from fans.
The German giants were knocked out of the competition after losing the first leg 1-0 and barely drawing the second leg on Tuesday in Munich, with Samuel Chukwueze‘s late equalizer putting the underdogs through to the semi-finals, where they will face Liverpool.
However, despite the sporting fallout from Bayern’s humbling defeat, Nagelsmann was singled out by fans.
The 34-year-old highlighted the amount of hatred he received on social media and the filthy texts he received ahead of the Bundesliga champions’ trip to Arminia Bielefeld on Sunday.
“I’m aware that I’ll face criticism from all sides at some point – that’s normal, and I’m prepared to deal with it.”
But it’s not easy with 450 death threats on Instagram,” Julian Nagelsmann said at a press conference. “It’s one thing if someone wants to kill me, but they also target my own mother, who doesn’t care about football.”
However, their early elimination at the hands of Unai Emery’s side has stained their campaign, as they were also eliminated from the DFB Pokal at the second round stage, blasted 5-0 by Borussia Monchengladbach.
