Luis Suarez meets Ghana once again

In Friday’s World Cup draw, the football gods gave up a retribution story worthy for Hollywood screenwriters by pairing Ghana with Uruguay in Group H.

On July 2nd, it will be 12 years since Luis Suarez broke the hearts of a country in South Africa.

The then-Ajax forward purposefully swatted the ball away with his hand to prevent Ghana from scoring a measurable goal that would have put the Black Stars in a World Cup quarterfinal for the first time.

Suarez was sent off for his conduct seconds into the penalty shootout, and Ghana was handed a chance, but Asamoah Gyan bubbled his spot-kick over the crossbar.

Suarez’s wild jubilation on his way to the locker room added salt to Ghana’s wounds as Uruguay eventually won the penalty shootout and advanced to the semifinals.

Suarez is expected to start against Ghana in Qatar unless he sustains an injury. It appears that this will be his final World Cup at the age of 35.

As a result, Ghana has the perfect opportunity to get the last laugh, or for a former tormentor to play the villain for the final time.
