The Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton has been called off following the high number of players and staff at Spurs that tested positive for the dreaded coronavirus.
The Premier League game was scheduled to kick off at 15:00 on December 12, 2021. It would have been Tottenham Hotspur’s 15th league game of the season.
The fact that the Premier League board decided to postpone the league game means that the number of people infected with the virus has escalated to the extent that the players available for the club’s games are less than the stipulated 14 or more players on the club’s squad list.
The announcement that the Premier League game between Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton has been postponed came hours after UEFA confirmed that Spurs’ Europa Conference League match against Rennes has been called off.
Reports claimed that over 8 first-team players of the club and five coaching crew members have tested positive for the virus in the last four days. According to the coach of the club, Antonio Conte, the rate at which the virus is spreading at the club is making everyone “a bit scared”.
Due to the scary way the virus has been spreading, the London-based club wrote to the Premier League board to call off their league game against Brighton.
“The Premier League Board has decided to postpone the game following guidance from medical advisers, with the health of players and staff the priority,” the Premier League said in a statement.
At the time of publishing this report, the Premier League board has not announced the date for the rearranged fixture.
After their Europa Conference League against Rennes and their Premier League game against Brighton was called off, Tottenham Hotspur started to apologize to Rennes and Brighton.
“We should like to apologize to everyone at Stade Rennais and Brighton & Hove Albion and both their supporters and ours for any inconvenience caused”, the club’s statement read.
“We should also like to thank both clubs for their understanding during these challenging times.”
Based on the coronavirus protocol in the United Kingdom, the Tottenham Hotspur players who tested positive for the virus would have to self-isolate for at least 10 days.
This means that there is a high possibility that the Tottenham Hotspur Premier League game against Leicester City on December 16 might also be rearranged.
