Tottenham Hotspur have terminated the contract of Serge Aurier by mutual consent on the 2021 summer transfer window deadline day, August 31.
Serge Aurier found it difficult to establish himself at Tottenham Hotspur for over three seasons after he joined the Premier League club from Paris Saint Germain.
He had the most difficult period of his career at Tottenham Hotspur in the era of coach Jose Mourinho between 2019 and 2021. The Portuguese coach did not give him regular game time which the 28-year-old Cote d’Ivoire right-back was not happy with.
After the 2020-2021 season, Serge Aurier who joined Tottenham from PSG on August 31, 2017 for a transfer fee worth €25 million joined a list of Spurs players that wanted to leave the club with no sure destination.
Aside from him, the club’s captain, Harry Kane wanted to also leave this summer with no sure destination. Only Manchester City showed up to sign him for £100 million which the club turned down.
After a series of back and forth, Harry Kane announced that he would stay back at the club for the rest of the 2021-2022 season which ended Manchester City’s pursuit of his signature.
As for Serge Aurier, he decided to leave Tottenham Hotspur without any club asking for his signature. Spurs waited for a suitor and none came until the transfer window closed.
When it was obvious that the 28-year-old defender would not have any suitor throughout the summer transfer window, Tottenham and Serge Aurier decided to part ways.
On his departure, Aurier said: “I have really enjoyed my time at Spurs and would like to thank the club and the fans, but I feel now is the right time for me to move onto a new challenge.”
As it stands, the Cote d’Ivoire defender is without a club and would not be able to get a club in any major league in Europe this summer because all the transfer windows in those major leagues have closed.
Hence, if Serge still wants to play in any major league in Europe, he would have to wait until the winter transfer window in January.
