Manchester United goalkeeper, Dean Henderson will not participate in the Manchester United training camp which is expected to take place in Scotland from this week. The 24-year-old English goalkeeper was allowed to stay back in Manchester to continue with his recovery process.
Recall that the England international spent the last three weeks trying to recover from the dreaded coronavirus. After recovery from the infection, he was left physically weak from the burden of the infection.
Hence, the club announced that Henderson would train again but would not train with the team for now with less than two weeks to the start of the 2021-2022 season.
“Dean Henderson will miss Manchester United’s Scotland training camp while he continues his recovery from prolonged fatigue after contracting a COVID-19 infection three weeks ago”, a club statement released on Monday read.
“He is expected to be training again soon.”
This is seen as very big news for David de Gea who has been battling to maintain his first choice ranking at the club since Dean Henderson returned to Manchester United ahead of the 2020-2021 season from Sheffield United where he has been on loan.
The 24-year-old English goalkeeper has succeeded in replacing De Gea as the club’s first choice goalkeeper, a change the Spanish goalkeeper is determined not to allow to stand.
To show how determined he is to get his position back, the Spain international had to cut short his post-Euro 2020 break and returned to the club earlier than expected. Since then, reports claimed that the 30-year-old goalkeeper has been training as hard as he could in anticipation of the forthcoming season.
Just like Dean Henderson, De Gea represented his country in Euro 2020 but did not make any appearance. This was caused by his inability to play regularly at United.
Next year is a FIFA World Cup year and the Spanish goalkeeper would want to follow Spain to the tournament not just as a backup goalkeeper but as a first-choice goalkeeper. To achieve that, he has to get back to reckoning at United as fast as possible.
Unfortunately for him, he does not only have Dean Henderson to compete with at Manchester United, the club has brought back Tom Heaton.
Heaton spent eight years at Manchester United before he left for Burnley and then Aston Villa. Before he left United, he was not able to make any appearance.
Now he is 35-year-old but still believes he can compete with Dean Henderson and De Gea for the club’s number one shirt. With the arrival of the English veteran goalkeeper, the Spanish goalkeeper knows that he has more to fight for than any other player at the club.
Unlike Henderson who has four seasons left on his contract with United, De Gea has just two seasons left on his contract which means that he has to work very hard to convince the club to extend his contract when the time is right.
