Patrick Mahomes has dived more into the business of American soccer by buying a stake in Major League Soccer club, Sporting Kansas City.
Patrick Mahomes has been playing American football popularly known as Baseball at the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League (NFL) since 2017.
According to an ESPN report, a source said Patrick Mahomes has been trying to acquire a stake in Sporting Kansas City long before now. He and the MLS club engaged in a series of negotiations for over 12 months before the soccer club agreed to give the Baseball star an ownership stake at the club.
Before he finally got his dream ownership stake in the MLS club, Patrick Mahomes reportedly made it a duty to always watch games involving Sporting Kansas City whenever he has the chance.
A source said the 25-year-old American baseball player has been to the Children’s Mercy Park, the home ground of the MLS club, to watch the club’s soccer games at least 12 times.
On one of the 12 occasions that Patrick Mahomes appeared at the club’s stadium, he participated in the “I Believe” chant before a 2018 playoff game.
Aside from that, Mahomes showed his love for soccer when he decided to attend the recent U.S. men’s national team match against Canada in the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup. The match took place at the same venue Sporting Kansas City always use for their home games.
Before now, the Baseball star bought a stake in Kansas City Royals while his fiancee, Brittany Matthews is the co-owner of Kansas City’s National Women’s Soccer League franchise.
After he successfully bought a stake in Sporting Kansas City, Patrick Mahomes said: “I am grateful for the opportunity to join Sporting Kansas City’s team and strengthen my connection to the fans and the city I love.
“Sporting is a community-oriented club, and I am excited to continue supporting the growth of soccer in Kansas City.”
