Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has replied to a 10-year-old Manchester United fan who sent him a letter asking him to make Liverpool lose their upcoming matches. The Red Devils young supporter who resides in Donegal wrote the German manager after becoming frustrated with the Reds’ winning streak.

United and Liverpool are eternal rivals and their rivalry is known as the Northwest Derby. The high-profile inter-city rivalry is considered to be one of the biggest rivalries in world football. The two clubs are the most successful English teams in domestic and European competitions.

Between the clubs, they have won 38 league titles, 9 European Cups, 4 UEFA Cups, 1 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, 5 UEFA Super Cups, 19 FA Cups, 13 League Cups, 2 FIFA Club World Cups, 1 Intercontinental Cup and 36 FA Community Shields. Each club can claim historical supremacy over the other, with United winning 20 league titles to Liverpool’s 18 and Liverpool for being European champions six times to United’s three. Manchester United lead in terms of total trophies won, with 66 to Liverpool’s 63

The Reds are on course to win their first Premier League title in 30 years after winning their last 17 Premier League matches, which is one less of the record held by Manchester City. Liverpool are also 22 points clear at the top of the table. The Reds have also been impressive in the Champions League this season despite suffering a 1-0 defeat against Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the last-16 clash on Tuesday.

However, the young United fan, Daragh Curley, as part of a school assignment asked the Liverpool boss not to allow his team to win any more match and give up the dream of winning their first top-flight trophy.

Daragh, who is a student of the Glenswilly National School, told Klopp that he did not want to see Liverpool surpass the record of 49 unbeaten Premier League set by Arsenal in 2002.

The letter read: “Liverpool are winning too many games. If you win nine more games then you have the best unbeaten run in English football. Being a United fan that is very sad.

“So the next time Liverpool play, please make them lose. You should just let the other team score. I hope I have convinced you to not win the league or any other match ever again.”

In his reply to the young United fan, Klopp surprisingly thanked Daragh and his family for writing him to appreciate his effort at Anfield. The Liverpool boss also appreciated his youngster’s passion for football and his club.

Klopp, however, told the 10-year-old that it was inevitable that his team would lose at some point due to the nature of football. He politely turned down Daragh’s request, saying that he can’t allow Liverpool to lose so as not to disappoint Liverpool fans worldwide

Klopp’s reply read: “Unfortunately, on this occasion, I cannot grant your request, not through choice anyway.

“As much as you want Liverpool to lose it is my job to do everything that I can to help Liverpool to win as there are millions of people around the world who want that to happen, so I really do not want to let them down.”

“Luckily for you, we have lost games in the past and we will lose games in the future because that is football.

“The problem is when you are 10-years-old you think that things will always be as they are now but if there is one thing I can tell you as 52-years-old it is that this most definitely isn’t the case.

“I think I can safely say that one thing that will not change is your passion for football and for your club. Manchester United are lucky to have you.

“I hope that if we are lucky enough to win more games and maybe even lift some more trophies you will not be too disappointed because although our clubs are great rivals we also share a great respect for one another.

“This, to me, is what football is all about.”

The father of the young fan was surprised that the Liverpool boss would read, let alone respond to the letter.

“My wife Tricia was up in the local post office/shop and she was told that there was a registered letter there for Daragh Curley,” Curley told the BBC.

“She was wondering who would be sending Daragh a registered letter, but when she mentioned it to Daragh he said ‘oh it’s Jurgen Klopp’. And it actually was Jurgen Klopp!”

Liverpool will hope to continue their winning streak in the Premier League when they welcome West Ham to Anfield on Monday.
