Cristiano Ronaldo won the Golden Boot award in the just concluded Euro 2020 despite exiting the tournament at the round of 16 stage.
The 36-year-old football star followed Portugal to the European Championship to defend the title they won in 2016. But they could not go as far as expected as they met a more determined Belgian team in the second stage of the tournament.
Before Belgium knocked out Portugal from Euro 2020 with a 1-0 win, Cristiano Ronaldo had scored five goals and provided an assist. Then, no one expected that the football icon would end up winning the tournament’s, Golden Boot.
Fortunately for the Juventus star, no player was able to surpass the five goals which he and Czech Republic attacker Patrik Schick scored before their journey ended in the tournament.
Why Cristiano Ronaldo became the sole winner of Euro 2020 Golden Boot
Though Cristiano Ronaldo and Patrik Schick ended their time in Euro 2020 with 5 goals apiece, the Portuguese football icon was given the Golden Boot. Ronaldo won the award because he had one assist why Schick had none.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored three of his five goals from the spot-kick while the remaining two goals were scored during open play.
He scored two goals in Portugal’s 3-0 win over Hungary in Group F. He scored a goal and provided an assist in the 4-2 defeat Portugal suffered at the hands of Germany in Group F.
His last two goals in the European Championship came in the last group game of the tournament which was against France. The game ended in a 2-2 draw which was enough to qualify Portugal for the round of 16 as one of the best losers of the tournament.
Cristiano Ronaldo failed to score in the round of 16 against Belgium. Hence, the Belgian team ran away with a 1-0 victory.
“Thanks to everyone who helped me achieve another historic milestone”, Ronaldo wrote on Instagram after it was announced that he has won the Golden Boot in the just-concluded European Championship.
