AC Milan center-forward, Rafael Leao scored the fastest goal in the history of Italian Serie A on Sunday, December 20, in an away league match against Sassuolo.
The 21-year-old Portuguese striker scored the record-breaking goal within the first six seconds of the league match to break the 19-year-old record.
The record was formerly held by Piacenza’s Paolo Poggi. He set the record on 2nd December 2001 in a league match between Piacenza and Fiorentina. It took Poggi 8.9 seconds to set the record which is about a second slower than that of Rafael.
In the league match which ended 2-1 in favor of AC Milan, Rafael Leao did not hesitate to go for the record-breaking goal immediately he got the pass from Hakan Calhanoglu. Fortunately for him, his attempt landed in the net.
The record-breaking goal is the third time in the 2020-2021 season that the Portuguese football star has scored a league goal for AC Milan. He has also provided three assists in 8 league games this season.
Before today’s goal, the last time Rafael Leao scored a league goal for AC Milan was on October 4, 2020, against Spezia Calcio. In the league match which ended 3-0 in favor of Milan, the Portuguese striker scored twice.
Ever since then, he has found it difficult to score until on Sunday when he decided to take his chance which earned him a record-breaking goal.
After Rafael Leao’s goal, AC Milan recorded the second goal in the 26th minute through the boots of Belgium midfielder Alexis Saelemaekers. Towards the end of the league match, Sassuolo tried to fight back after Sassuolo’s Domenico Berardi 89th minute goal. But the goal became a mere consolation as the match ended 2-1.
