Robert Lewandowski of Bayern Munich has broken the dominance of Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo and FC Barcelona’s Lionel Messi by winning 2020 The Best FIFA Award.

The 32-year-old Polish striker won the Men category of the award today, December 17, 2020, in Zurich, Switzerland. This means that he could have won the Ballon d’Or this year if the prestigious football award was not canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

By winning this year’s edition of The Best FIFA Award, Robert Lewandowski has become the second footballer in the history of any major football award ceremony to break the dominance of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi since 2008.

The first person to pause their dominance was Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modrić who won 2018 The Best FIFA Award and Ballon d’Or ahead of Messi and Ronaldo.

Lewandowski was considered for this year’s The Best FIFA Award due to his unmatchable performance last season where he scored 15 goals and provided 6 assists in the UEFA Champions League to help Bayern Munich win the prestigious European title.

He scored a total of 55 goals in all competitions to help Bayern Munich finish the 2019-2020 season with the German Bundesliga title, UEFA Super Cup, and the DFB-Pokal.

He has continued with his fantastic form this season as he has recorded 11 goals and provided 4 assists in 15 league games for Bayern Munich. The Polish striker has scored a total of 18 goals and provided 5 assists in 17 games in all competitions.

On the other hand, Lucy Bronze was voted The Best FIFA woman footballer of the year. The England international helped the French female side, Lyon, to win the club’s third successive Women UEFA Champions League title last season.

She now plays for Manchester City’s female team. She joined the English club ahead of the 2020-2021 season.

Meanwhile, though Lewandowski conquered Messi and Ronaldo in terms of winning the prestigious The Best FIFA Award, he could not stop them from getting into FIFAPRO Men’s World 11.

Apart from Lewandowski, Messi, and Ronaldo, other players on the team are Alisson Becker; Trent Alexander-Arnold; Sergio Ramos; Virgil van Dijk; Alphonso Davies; Kevin de Bruyne; Thiago Alcantara; and Joshua Kimmich.

While the players on FIFA FIFPRO Women’s World 11 are: Christiane Endler; Lucy Bronze; Wendie Renard; Millie Bright; Delphine Cascarino; Barbara Bonansea; Veronica Boquete; Megan Rapinoe; Pernille Harder; Vivianne Miedema; Tobin Heath.
