The future of Barcelona talisman, Lionel Messi still remains a subject of speculation as the Catalan club continues to witness more structural changes.
It was gathered that the likes of Gerard Pique and Messi want to see structural changes in the club. The Argentine could decide to the extent his contract which expires in June 2021 with the club if given assurance by the incoming government after the Josep Bartomeu-led board resigned a few weeks ago.
The new changes that have come to the Catalan club is that of the board advisor role, which has been manned by Carles Rexach. The former Barcelona coach and long-serving board advisor will leave the club at the end of the current year. His current deal with the club expires next month.
According to La Vanguardia, Rexach who had been an advisor to Bartomeu, who resigned last month – will leave the Camp Nou December 2020.
Is Messi the reason Rexach is leaving Barcelona or just structural changes?
Rexach had a short stint with the club on the touchline between 2001 and 2002. He had already coached the youth teams at the club and was also a former assistant to the senior side.
Rexach, who is also a legendary former Barca player has been an advisor to the club since 2010 when Sandro Rosell-led board won the election.
This means that Rexach has worked at Camp Nou in multiple capacities in a near total uninterrupted spell since joining as a youth player in 1959.
Meanwhile, the interim president of the club Carlos Tusquets is likely to remain in the position until January. According to El Mundo Deportivo, the Blauguran’s new elections for the presidency will be held in January 2021.
However, what remains to be confirmed is if Messi was instrumental to Rexach’s exit due to some adjustment in the locker room position. Coach Ronald Koeman and got the approval of Messi and Rexach before going ahead.
Come June 2021, Mesi will have a lot of options in his hand – either to extend his deal at Camp Nou and play for one European top club throughout his career like Francesco Totti or move to another club.
Another twist to it was that it was the Barça Management Board chaired by Carles Tusquets terminated Rexach’s contract. La Vanguardia reports that the board felt since there is no president yet, having advisers around that figure makes no sense.
Barcelona could stop that from happening if Messi gets an assurance and they meet his stated conditions. What’s surrounding the future of the mercurial Argentine? Time will tell.
