Sonia Adesuwa has tendered a heartfelt apology to her ex-husband Odion Ighalo via an Instagram post two years after they parted ways.
The pair divorced in 2022 but Sonia has been constantly in the neck of Ighalo. She had dragged the footballer for his purported role in the divorce.
Where it went sour between Odion Ighalo and Sonia Adesuwa
It cannot be pointed out when things began to go sour between Ighalo and Sonia. However, close sources revealed the marriage began to suffer fractures in early 2019 before it came to full glare in 2020 when Odion Ighalo’s sister, Mary Atole, collapsed and died in Canada.
According to reports, Mary Atole and Sonia didn’t have a good relationship. And Sonia withheld her expected condolence and expression of sympathy due to the beef that existed between them. She even reportedly taunted Ighalo over the death of the sister, further deepening tensions between the pair.
While some reports claim Sonia’s difficult relationship with Mary Atole before her death led to the breakdown of the marriage, others claim the marriage was already in crisis and was only deepened after Atole’s demise.

The pair would finally end the 13-year marriage in 2022 after irreconcilable differences. However, the dissolution of the marriage did not mark the end of the story.
An unceasing social media row and war of words ensued between the pair. They frequently throw tantrums on each other with Sonia going as far as blaming Ighalo and his family for their difficult matrimonial life.
At some point, she accused Ighalo’s mother, Martina Ighalo, of trying to kill her to control her husband’s property.
In a surprising turn of events, Sonia has now issued a lengthy heartfelt apology to Ighalo. According to her, she acknowledges Ighalo’s emotional suffering and his dedication to being a caring father, even amidst family challenges.
Sonia finally apologizes to Ighalo
Taking to her Instagram, Sonia wrote;
“Many individuals assert that I possess a powerful, mysterious allure, which is why I am particularly cautious about the people I allow into my life. Ending a relationship or friendship is always challenging for me.
“My beloved superstar, we’ve journeyed far together, and I’m truly grateful for the grace God has bestowed upon our lives. We both struggled to make this work, even in the face of divorce. I understand how careful you were to keep your family in the dark about what was happening behind closed doors, knowing that it would start another fight and I know how hard you fought to be a loving father to your children despite family pressures.
“Also, I understand the emotional pain you’re experiencing due to your separation from your beloved family (John 10:10), despite your efforts to portray a false sense of happiness on Instagram to appease them. You are a wonderful man, and I will always be there for you physically and spiritually.
“I am using this opportunity to express my sincere apologies for the negative impact my posts may have had on you. Given the nature of your job, peace is essential for you, and because of your purity, I bear no resentment towards you. I believe the greatest blessing for a child is to be born to a loving mother (not evil).
“We’ve both forgiven each other and realized our mistakes. If I could wish anything at this moment, it would be for divine grace and strength from God to help us co-parent harmoniously and ensure our children feel a sense of pride in us. I wish you all the best.”
Odion Ighalo dated American lady Caroline Brooks amidst matrimonial crisis
Amidst the tense matrimonial relationship with Sonia, Ighalo appeared to have moved on. Before they even divorced in 2022, he was rumoured to be dating an American lady and influencer, Caroline Brooks.
While there has been no confirmation that the pair are actually dating, it was rumoured that the Nigerian footballer had decided to move on with the beautiful blonde.
It is yet unconfirmed whether the footballer still have an affair with Brooks but the latter surfaced at the peak of the tensed relationship between him and his now-estranged wife.
Before the sad end to the relationship, Ighalo and Sonia have reportedly been together since 2009. They reportedly met in Italy where they fell in love and started dating, got married for 13 years before the divorce.
Judging by her latest Instagram post, Sonia seems open to burying the hatchet with her ex-husband and hopes for a positive co-parenting experience for the duo for the sake of the children.

Odion Ighalo has three children – Samuel, Daniel, and Bernice – with Sonia Adesuwa. Before the divorce, Sonia had alleged that the footballer fathered two children from other women – a claim Ighalo has yet to respond to.

The 35-year-old Nigerian striker has played for top clubs like Udinese, Granada, Watford, China’s Shanghai Shenhua, Manchester United, Al-Hilal and now Al-Wheda of Saudi Arabia.
He signed a two-year contract with the club till 2025. His estimated weekly wages at the club is €200,000 while his net worth as of 2024 is €50m.
