Liverpool’s second-choice goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher may leave the club this summer.
The 25-year-old has made 26 appearances for Liverpool in the just-concluded 2023-24 season but is reportedly unfazed by his dwindling fortunes at the club.
The Irish stopper is Liverpool’s second-choice goalkeeper, playing second fiddle to Alisson Becker. According to Daily Mail, Caoimhin Kelleher want to settle for a decision on his future and will be open to leaving the club this summer.
In a quote attributed to the player, as shared by the English media outlet, Kelleher made it clear he wants clarity on his future with the club this summer ahead of the next campaign.
‘I’ve had such an amazing time at Liverpool, it’s been a crazy journey for me and one that I’ve absolutely loved.
‘I love the club, I love the fans and I have a great relationship with the players and the staff.
‘Whether it’s here at Liverpool or somewhere else, I do feel the next step for me is to be a No 1.’
With Alisson Becker in the picture, the Caoimhin is not likely to work his way into a starting role.
However, there are still chances he could beat the odds and nail home a starting role should new Liverpool manager Arne Slot decide to reshuffle the pecking order at the goalkeeping department.
Kelleher kept the sticks for the Reds, helping the club clinch the EFL Cup – their only trophy of the 2023-24 campaign.
He made the lineup in the game due to Alisson Becker’s injuries and was dropped to his second place when the Brazilian returned from the sidelines.
Sources close to the Liverpool dressing room reveal Slot is more likely to go with Alisson Becker but has yet to decide, and could also give Kelleher a chance.
Kelleher has two years left on his Liverpool contract but could be forced to leave the club this summer if he is not sure of a starting role.
