Tottenham Hotspur tanked their top-four hopes with a 4-2 defeat to Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday, May 5 at Anfield.
Goals from Mohamed Salah, Robertson, Cody Gakpo, and Harvey Elliot condemned the Lilywhites to a defeat at Anfield.
However, the visitors were able to save face and restore some dignity to the scoreline when they struck a double through Richarlison and Son Heung-Min to reduce the score margin.
It was another disappointing campaign for the team who have now suffered four consecutive defeats in the Premier League.
At the break, Liverpool had already gone two goals up and tension was already brewing in the visitors’ camp at the defence.
Defensive duo, Emerson Royal and Cristian Romeo were seen in a furious bust-up en route to the tunnel.
The feuding pair had to be separated by their teammate and goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario as they matched off the field for the break.
Addressing the incident in his post-match press conference, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou took to the defense of the pair. The former Celtic boss said the players feuded because they care for the club and are not satisfied with the current situation of things.
He added he has no problem with such emotions as long as it is constructive enough to improve the player and the team.
‘’They care. They are not going to just be happy with the current situation,’ Postecoglou insisted.
‘‘Because they care, they want to improve. There is nothing wrong with that as long as it stays constructive. They want to change the situation and not just accept it,’ added the Spurs boss.
On the defeat to the Reds, Ange Postecoglou hailed the team for showing a strong mentality at Anfield. He disputed claims the team is struggling with mentality issues against big teams.
“It’s got nothing to do with mentality,’ he said. ‘If you come to Anfield and don’t try to play, maybe that shows that you don’t have the mentality.
“We definitely tried to play so it’s not a mentality issue at all. In fact, it’s the polar opposite of that. The mentality was for us to go out and try to be a version of ourselves. We’re short absolutely but it gives me something to work with,’ the Australian added.
However, Ange Postecoglou admitted it was another disappointing result for the team but at least they did needful by being themselves and going all out for the game.
‘It’s a hugely disappointing outcome but at least we were more like ourselves than in our last two away games where we didn’t try and play football,’ he said. ‘At four-nil, we had a mountain to climb but when we play like ourselves, we put pressure on the opposition.”
The Australian will be hoping to return the team to winning ways, hosting relegation battlers Burnley in their next Premier League game on Saturday, May 11.
