Borussia Dortmund fast rising star, Gio Reyna has said he is committed to the Bundesliga club for the long haul, and wants to win trophies with them.

Reyna had a breakout season in January 2019-20 with the BVB after making a progress from the team’s under 19 in just six months. After linking up with Dortmund’s U19 from the New York City FC academy in summer 2019, he got promoted to the first team. He scored four goals and created seven assists in 12 outings for the youth side.

The 17-year-old attacking midfielder has so far made 18 Rückrunde appearances for the 2019/20 Bundesliga runners-up. He has therefore usurp former Dortmund ace Christian Pulisic as the youngest US national to appear in the German top flight.

His progress also continued by opening his goal account for the BVB in the DFB Cup Round of 16. He also became the youngest Dortmund player to feature in the Champions League, as well as the greenest American to play and assist a goal in the competition.

Gio Reyna continues to impress for Borussia Dortmund ahead of the new season

Having staked his claim in the senior team, Reyna picked up where he left off in pre-season, scoring four goals in three friendly outings. One can say that he is ready for his first full season with the pros. The US international is also hoping that it will be the first of many.

“Right now, I am just very happy here and that is what counts.

“I’m not passing through here at Dortmund. It’s a club competing for titles. The incredible fans alone make BVB something special,” Reyna told German tabloid Bild.

Reyna is playing alongside some of the brightest young talents in football. This is a further appeal for the black-and-yellow. Dortmund has also made some youthful signing this summer with Jude Bellingham and Reiner joining the team’s midfield.

Reyna is also complemented with 19-year-old striker goal machine Erling Haaland, who has received two pro assists from him so far. Another teammate of high class is 20-year-old England international Jadon Sancho (20).

Having turned Reyna’s US compatriot Pulisic into the global star, Dortmund could make Reyna to be the next big thing at the club as well.

Pulisic made his Dortmund pro debut at 17, and went on to play 127 senior competitive games in his five years at the Signal Iduna Park.

“It’s a lot of fun to be out there on the pitch with Jadon and Erling. In the Champions League match against Paris, we formed the attack towards the end, and we won 2-1.

“Two 19-year-olds and a 17-year-old, that was pretty cool. This can make the club proud, because that’s exactly what the club stands for,” Reyna explained.

Reyna is in line to make his third Bundesliga start on the opening weekend of the new season when Dortmund host Borussia Mönchengladbach on 19 September.
