Harry Maguire had a night to forget after another disastrous performance for England against Scotland.
The former Leicester City canter-back scored an own during an international friendly match against Scotland on Tuesday, 12th of September, at Hampden Park.
Despite not being included in the England starting XI for Tuesday night’s British derby game, Harry Maguire managed to make the sporting headlines.
England were leading in the first half after two goals from Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden, and they looked on course to cruise to glory.
However, Harry Maguire came in as a substitute to replace March Guehi of Crystal Palace as the center-back was tasked with pairing with Lewis Dunk of Brighton & Hove Albion for the match’s second half.
Despite his years of experience in the position on the pitch, the Manchester United former captain reclaimed an own goal and assisted the Tartan Army back into the match at 2-1 to England.
The Scots were unable to register a single shot on goal at Hampden Park before Maguire’s deflection of Andy Robertson’s cross past goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale in the 67th minute gave them optimism of launching a comeback.
Harry Maguire has been out of favor at Manchester United in previous times, but England manager Gareth Southgate maintained his faith in him for the Three Lions Euro 2024 qualifier against Ukraine only for the 30-year-old to put in a disappointing performance.
The former Leicester City defender was sported looking utterly discouraged as he wrapped his face with his jersey.
Meanwhile, England reacted competently to their setback after Bellingham set up Harry Kane to reclaim his side’s two-goal advantage in the 81st minute.
The match result ended Scotland’s winning streak of five straight triumphs.
Meanwhile, the match saw England become the first European country to win 600 matches in men’s international football.
The Three Lions supporters shouted in unison to Maguire’s name throughout the second half, including blowing him out.
Meanwhile, Gareth Southgate has defended the 30-year-old defender claiming his critics are jokes.
Speaking after England’s 3-1 win at Hampden Park, Southgate said; “From a Scotland fan’s point of view, I get it and I have absolutely no complaints with what they did”.
“It is a consequence of the ridiculous treatment of him for a long period, frankly”.
“It’s a joke. I’ve never known a player treated the way he is. Not by the Scottish fans, by our own commentators, pundits, whatever it is”.
What’s next for Harry Maguire
The former Manchester United captain might be possibly back in the Red Devils starting XI in return for the English Premier League on Saturday, 16th September 2023, due to United’s injury worries when they lock horns against Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford.
