The Segunda Division which is the second tier league in Spanish club football came to an end on Sunday with Segunda playoffs. The playoffs produced the third club that gained promotion to La Liga ahead of the 2020-2021 season.
At the end of the prolonged 2019-2020 season, Huesca, Cádiz FC, and Elche CF became the three new teams that will feature in the 2020-2021 La Liga season which would commence on Saturday, 12 September and ends on Sunday, 23 May 2021.
Meet the new Spanish La Liga clubs
Huesca:
Huesca first tested La Liga’s action during the 2018-2019 season but didn’t last beyond that season before they returned to the Segunda Division. They are back to the apex league in Spain as the champions of the Segunda Division. Huesca won the league with 70 points after winning 21 games, drawing 7 and losing 14 games in 42 games.
Huesca will carryout their 2020-2021 La Liga campaign in their 7,638 capacity stadium called El Alcoraz. They will depend mostly on former Leicester City striker Shinji Okazaki for most of the goals that will help them to survive in La Liga.
Cádiz:
Cádiz are back to the Spanish La Liga for the first time in 14 years. The first time they played in the apex league was during the 1977-1978 season.
Unlike on most occasions, they didn’t wait for the playoffs to secure their promotion to La Liga. They did that by finishing second on the Segunda Division table with just a point away from the table leaders. Cádiz won 19 games, drew 12 and loss 11 which were enough to see them through.
The club will play their home matches at Estadio Ramón de Carranza stadium with 25,033 seating capacity. They will depend on Álvaro Negredo for most of the goals to survive in the league.
Elche:
Elche had to wait for the very last day to secure their promotion to La Liga. Though they finished 6th on the League table, winning the Segunda playoffs was enough to guarantee them a place among the 20 clubs that will compete for the La Liga title in the 2020-2021 season.
It was not an easy task for Elche as they held tight to their winger, Pere Milla’s 96th-minute goal scored in the second leg of the playoffs against Girona to secure their place on Sunday 1-0 on aggregate.
They are expected to play their home games at Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero stadium with 33,732 seating capacity. Their star man is 40-year-old Juan Francisco Martínez Modesto (Nino).
