2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup: Australia 1-3 England

The Lionesses are one step away from glory and they might eventually be coming home with the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup title.

After conquering Europe, Sarina Wiegman’s England are only a game away from becoming world champions.

They thrashed co-host Australia by 3-1 in emphatic fashion, via goals from Ella Toone, Lauren Hemp, and Alessia Russo.

Samantha Kerr scored the consolation for Australia in the 63rd minute, to make the score look less embarrassing.

Kerr’s astonishing goal was an equalizer, but 8 minutes later, Lauren Hemp got England back into the lead with a well-placed finish into the bottom corner.

The game witnessed beautiful goals as Ella Toone’s opener in the first 45 was a delightful shot into the top corner and Alessia Russo’s finish was also an inch-perfect shot.

Sarina Wiegman’s side had the larger share of the possession, with Australia opting to play cautiously and less expressively.

England are a more expressive side, obviously due to the amount of quality they have at their disposal.

The Matildas have also been remarkable in the tournament, however, they just couldn’t surmount the powerful Lionesses.

Tony Gustavsson’s side will now play against Sweden in the third-place match, as they battle for the bronze medal of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

For England, the final will be a repeat of the 2022 European Championships, with the Stadium Australia in Sydney set to host the epic clash.

Spain and England set to battle again in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup final

Sarina Wiegman’s side defeated Spain by 2-1 in the quarter-final, and supporters of the Lionesses will be hoping for a repeat of a similar outcome.

England have now qualified for a FIFA World Cup final for the first time since 1966, when they defeated West Germany by 4-2 in the final.

They have been building in the past couple of years and Sarina Wiegman has been the woman with the magic wand.

In 37 games managed, Sarina has only lost 1 game and she has led England to win the European Championships and Finallisma.

The Lionesses will be heading into the final as favorites, but they will also not want to leave any room for complacency, given the amount of quality the Spaniard also posses.

England had 58% of the possession, while Australia had 42%, while in terms of shots, the Lionesses had 15, while Spain had 12.

For shots on target, Australia had 4 shots on target, while finalist England had 5 shots on target.

Throughout the 90 minutes of action, only two yellow cards were brandished by referee Tori Penso and it was shown to Alex Greenwood and Chloe Kelly of England.

England are yet to lose any game in the tournament

The Lionesses haven’t tasted a defeat in the tournament and they will be hoping that they can exit the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup on a successful note.

For their opponent, Spain, Jorge Vilda’s side have lost only once in the tournament and it was a 4-0 defeat to Japan in the group stage.

The final at 11:00 on Sunday, August 20, definately promises to be a spectacle with two sides, stacked with massive quality.
